NitrAte, not to be confused with Nitrite, often is often thought of as the 'final' stage of the nitrogen cycle.

While it small amounts of NitrAte are not harmful to Koi or other fish, they are DOC and will lead to increased growth of Alge. Large amounts of NitrAte can be harmful to fish health.
